Speaking of a script...

My father was contacted in the 1980s by a producer (I do not know who) who was working on a screenplay for the prequel to The Sting. According to the writer, the prequel would be portraying Paul Newman's character,Henry Gondorff, as a young man. Guess who his mentor was going to be?

Soapy Smith of course!

Very cool Scott. I could not locate the grave but I am confident you did. Once you visit it in the summer remember to log the GPS coordinates. In fact, there is an online site (will have to use my GPS to find it again) that plans to log every known grave in the U.S.

Thank you Craig. You solved a mystery for the Smith family. There are a couple of letters from Soapy Smith to his wife Mary, in which he calls her "Mollie." I had never heard before that "Mollie" is a common variant of Mary. It never dawned on me to look up the name in the dictionary.

Apropos of nothing: About a month ago I was listening to Focus 580 when, 35 minutes into the show the guest, an investigative reporter for the New York Times, suddenly said that the newsroom has just erupted with activity and his coworkers were signaling for him to get off the phone immediately to get to work on a breaking story. The host, David Inge, let the guest go -- what else could he do? -- and rather than tap-dance for the final 25 minutes of the show, joined the BBC News in progress. A few minutes later, the BBC did a segment in which the missing guest was interviewed, live. So the jig was up, and Inge chuckled that it was the first time he'd been stood up in the middle of a show. David's been around for along time and is retiring soon; I guess he can now that he's seen it all. Good luck, Amy.
